MARK AND TRACY DRURY – Muzzleloader ‘04

My wife, Tracy & I were planning a hunt to celebrate our 15th wedding
anniversary. I had heard some great things about Donny Carr and
Golden Eagle Outfitters from Blake Shelby at Peterson's Hunting. Tracy
& I had a fantastic time. Tracy killing a gross 178" buck was almost
secondary to the experiences we shared. We decided to get away
"alone" no cameramen, no editors. Now that we've been there, we'll
probably go back every year not so much to hunt but rather to see
Donny, Sean and the gang at Golden Eagle.

Thanks guys for making our 15th anniversary so memorable!

As a professional big game hunter, I can honestly say that the best dear
hunting in the world can be found at Baby Doll's in Colorado!
W-H-O-O-P-S!!!!!! I mean:

In October of 2004, a friend and I hunted with Golden Eagle Outfitters,
located near Limon, Colorado. The accommodations were very
comfortable, and the meals were great. Donny Carr and his staff were
very knowledgeable and assisted us throughout the hunt. Hunting
conditions were superb, and my friend and I harvested the largest mule
deer of our hunting experiences. His scored 189 5/8, and mine was
199 7/8. Fantastic hunting -- I would highly recommend Golden Eagle
Outfitters!

I would like to tell you that you have a great bunch of guides working for
you and they work hard to put you on the quality of animal that you are
looking to harvest. Your accommodations are great and one does not
need to come to Golden Eagle Outfitters with the thought of losing
weight, instead one needs to plan on adding an extra pound or two. I am
looking forward to coming back in 2005 for another plains mule deer
hunt and hopefully harvesting one that will top the 183-3/8 score of the
one from this year.

Thanks for all you guys do and look forward to seeing you again.

BARNES LAWSON – Rifle ‘04

For the 2004 late season deer rifle hunt I booked a hunt with my old
friend Donny Carr of Golden Eagle Outfitters. I hadn't hunted with
Golden Eagle Outfitters since the 2001 Antelope hunt, which was filmed
by Mighty Joe White with Mossy Oak productions.

Somehow my trusty 30-06 was banged up on its last flight and I lost
confidence in it. I had recently purchased a 300 Ultra Mag, but wasn't
able to shoot it before traveling to Colorado. I came out a day early so
that I could shoot the gun, sight it in and get used to the trigger pull.

I was supposed to be guided by Donny but I met Rob Wagner the day
before and we went out scouting and saw some nice bucks. Donny let
me stick with Rob on opening day because of this.

Opening day came bright and cold. We started by looking over
Bernice's field. I saw a nice buck with a broken leg that I wanted to take
but Rob told me it was too small!

He and I then did a short 3 mile walk on Fletcher's Ranch in about 6
inches of soft snow. We saw a lot of tracks but no deer.

At about 10:30 a.m. we traveled approximately 10 miles and looked over
Craig's bluff and Rob saw a deer that he decided merited a closer look.
We drove up on top of the bluff and walked to the edge - there right
where he thought it would be, was the buck, but again Rob wouldn't let
me shoot!

That evening and first thing the next morning we watched does in
Bernice's Alfalfa Field. About 8:00 a.m. the second morning we decided
to scout a near-by creek bottom. Rob spotted deer from about 1 mile
away at the edge of the woods and alfalfa field. He found a 180 class
buck and finally the hunt was on. We drove behind the woods and
began a stalk. After traveling about 1 ½ miles we spotted deer. Rob and
I traveled in the creek (dry) bed and Rob would climb up the bank and
glass. We finally approached a group of does. We really didn't spook
the deer but we did gently push them forward down the creek bed. All of
a sudden the buck ran across the creek bed and up the right bank
before I could get a shot off. We raced up the bank when Rob urgently
whispered "Don't move.".

Unfortunately a doe was staring directly at us. We held still as long as
we could and the deer (including the buck) didn't really spook but did
begin to deliberately move away from us and towards the right. I took
two quick steps and held the new rifle against a tree trunk.

Rob was saying "Shoot!" "Shoot!" but all I could see was the top of the
buck's antlers moving briskly through the grass. Slowly the elevation the
deer was traveling over rose enough that I was able to see well enough
for a chest shot. The shot felt good and Rob exclaimed "He's down!". As
I approached the deer I was astonished at the massive antlers. After the
pictures were taken and Rob field dressed the deer, I asked where the
truck was. Rob pointed and there it was in clear sight about 500 yards
away.

I owe the success of this hunt to Donny and Rob. Donny for running the
deer camp and having such prime territory to hunt on. Rob is an
incredible guide - knowing just what to do and where to go. Even though
the rut was winding down - he consistently spotted deer I never saw and
knew just where to position us for a shot.

I'm now figuring out my preference/points situation to line up my next
hunt with Donny and Rob.
